Oba sacrificing a leopard from Benin Metropolis, c1500s-1600s
This masterpiece of Benin artwork pulses with character, life and energy. It is among the many brass and bronze reliefs that after adorned the palace of the Oba, ruler of the West African state of Benin in present-day Nigeria. European narratives and depictions of the time when it was constructed, with steel sculptures of troopers, snakes and birds testifying to the magnificence of this constructing, all share the great thing about this plaque. On this scene, the Oba sacrifices an animal that was a part of the coronation ceremony – apparently swinging two leopards by their tails. However this isn’t essentially a sensible depiction as he additionally has two fish with eyes protruding from his waist. His armored and bejeweled physique is as sturdy as a tree, his face mirrored from the metallic world. It’s one among many extraordinary artistic endeavors looted within the British “punitive” invasion of Benin in 1897.
